What to do if you have been burgled

May 12, 2016 ◄ Back

What would you do if you woke or came home to find you have been burgled? Here’s some handy tips to help dire situations.

Arrange for the locks to be changed: The intruder may have taken a spare set of keys which will allow easy excess. There may also be damage to the lock that is not immediately visible. Banham Patented keys are registered to the home owner to prevent any unauthorised persons duplicating the key. A Banham cylinder can be changed within the hour for as little as £122+vat by one of our expert locksmiths.

Make a list of missing or damaged items: The police may ask for a list to add to the crime report for evidence or your insurance company may ask for a list to include on your claims form. Take photos of each room to prove damages and obvious stolen items, try to locate any receipts or proof of purchase.

Confirm your Insurance requirements: When you call your insurance company or if you’ve now decided it’s time to invest in home or contents insurance, check what their requirements are. For example many insurance companies require a mortice lock AND a deadbolt lock on your front door as well as your alarm to be installed and serviced by an NSI approved company. Banham are approved to the highest Gold standard.

Arrange for a professional security survey: It is sensible to have a security survey carried out by a professional as they are able to point out vulnerabilities in your home that you may not have been aware of which can easily and quickly be addressed.

Don’t cut corners with your security: Consultants, Police and insurance companies will always advise installing high security locks on doors, windows, sheds and gates; as well as a reputable company to install an intruder alarm system. There are alarm systems that can offer a fully monitored service allowing a rapid response and direct link to the emergency services should the need arise. Consider your front door: Take into account the strength of your front door as well as the quality of the installation. Banham can provide high security doors with internal steel sheets and additional door security to accompany the installation such as; concealed steel hinge bolts; an effective solution for securing and reinforcing the hinge side of a door, reinforcing strips; to help secure the frame and locks on the door, or if you have a letter box consider a letter box protector; designed to prevent burglars from looking into your property through the letterbox hole and block any attempts of a hand or object reaching through.

Protect your side access: Make sure your side gate does not have a convenient handle for a thief to use as a step to climb over. If you don’t have a side gate or a strong lock ask your security consultant to provide a quote. Gates, shutters and grilles can be supplied and installed by Banham.
